So what’s this site about? Well, the title says it all. Welcome to my site, here I’m going to review laptops and hopefully it will help you decide what the best laptop under 1000 dollars is. So how will you know? It all depends on what you’ll be using it for. Don’t worry, I’m not going to patronize you, or pretend I’m an “expert”. What I do is try out the latest laptops to hit the market, and I’ll explain what I think.

The thing is I don’t know what the best one is for you, that’s something you’ll hopefully be able to work out for yourself. Perhaps you’ve got your eye on a particular model already, and just need to see how a real person finds it.
I won’t bore you with boring technical jargon that any vendor can tell you. Instead, I’ll explain my experiences as they unfold. From the time I unbox it, to turning it on, etc. I’ll give you the run down on battery life, real world performance, and then you can use this information to compare to my other reviews.

The 64 gigabyte worth of storage capacity is more than enough for storing multimedia files, games and other stuff of interest. It should also be mentioned here that the Mac OS X Lion compliments the processing power of the device very well and makes browsing and surfing exceptionally fun. The interface is catchy and colorful with lots of eye-candy and extremely user-friendly; something that Apple has always been known to deliver.
Display
The 11.6 inch display screen is big and colorful with a high pixel per inch density that is characteristic of Apple. It has dynamic contrast ratio and saturation levels are well-balanced making the laptop ideal for multimedia activities and gaming.
Build quality, Dynamics and Aesthetics

The Toshiba Portege R835-P56x feels and look like a pretty solid unit. The magnesium alloy finish is a pleasure to look at. Inside, the keyboard gave me a slightly cramped feeling for a while (until I got used to it) but you can’t expect a full sized keyboard in a machine that houses a 13.3 inch screen. The keys felt ok while typing, and I got the feel for it within minutes. The touchpad is very responsive, and even though the keyboard is a little cramped, I didn’t have any problems with accidental knocks or brushes of the touchpad, which can be a pain with some machines (particularly ultra portables).
Toshiba Portege R835-P56x Review
The display is clear and crisp, although you have to have the right viewing angle, but on the downside (not really a major problem) the speakers, as you would expect, are tinny at best. The Toshiba Portege R835-P56x has a USB 3.0 port for those of you that have high speed devices. The webcam works really well, delivering bright and clear images in most lighting situations.
Overall, performance of this machine is good. For gamers, you can expect reasonable frame rates from most games, of course, it will depend on what settings you have the game set to, it won’t break any speed records if they’re set to high, but overall, I was impressed.
The battery life is excellent, I managed to get 6 and a half hours of use on the Toshiba Portege R835-P56x’s first charge. This will obviously depend on what you’re doing with the machine though (I was using it to browse web pages mostly).
The Toshiba Portege R835-P56x is bundled with a bit of bloat-ware, but there’s some useful utilities too. Also included is Office 2010 Starter.

The Acer Aspire TimelineX AS3830T-6417 is a fantastic little laptop. It’s ultra compact in that it’s only 13.3 inches in screen real estate, but it packs a fairly impressive punch.

The Intel® Core™ i3-2310M is zippy and the inclusion of USB 3.0 makes life easier if you’re into transferring lots of large files from other devices.
I like the cobalt blue exterior, and it’s reasonable sturdy too. The keyboard is a pleasure to use and doesn’t feel cramped as some can in a laptop this size.
One notable omission in terms of hardware is a DVD drive, but, for most folks that would be using a machine of this size, it’s not a problem, but an external drive will be in order if you need to use one.
The display is razor sharp and easy on the eyes, even after 7 hours of testing, the battery was still going strong. The sound isn’t too bad considering the size of the speakers, but generally speaking, they’re never built for audiophiles.
For movies buffs, the HD quality output is impressive, and quite smooth too. You can even connect to a larger tv via the HDMI port.
The touchpad is accurate and responsive too.

The concept of a Chromebook is an interesting one. What is it exactly? A netbook? A laptop? Well, it’s sort of those things but not. Confused? Let me try to explain. After using the Acer AC700-1099 Chromebook, it in some ways, asks more questions than it answers. To look at the machine, it looks like any netbook you might see around. But when you take a closer look, you soon realise it’s different all together.
For starters, the keyboard doesn’t have any function keys at the top. There’s no delete key, to delete something, you either have to press the backspace key or right click on highlighed text and choose delete. There isn’t even a caps lock key. It takes some time to get used to the keyboard layout to be honest. Also, there’s no OS as such. When you turn on the machine it loads a Chrome browser with a bunch of icons on it. There’s no X to click to display the desktop, the browser is the desktop.
- Acer AC700-1099 Chromebook Review
You can’t install any windows software on it, you can only download apps from Google. There isn’t any means to store anything on it either. Apps and other system software is stored in the “cloud”. You can’t even connect it to your printer. If you want to print something, you need to connect wirelessly to another wi-fi enabled pc that is connected to a printer. Very annoying.
On the bright side, the Acer AC700-1099 Chromebook boots up extremely fast, so you can be working or browsing the web at no time. There’s no need to be worried about security, all of that is taken care of by Google Chrome OS, which is very handy if you’re not always as up to date as you could be. The screen is bright and crystal clear, and the battery delivered me around 5 hours of life. I used it fairly heavily though, so you could probably do better.

The Acer AC700-1099 Chromebook is an example of how we might be headed with pc’s in the future, it’s fast, and if you do work predominantly online, it could well fit the bill as a machine somewhere in between a full blown pc and a tablet.
So what do I think? After a fairly interesting learning curve, I really got to like the idea of using a pc like the Acer AC700-1099 Chromebook. It works well, and for early adopters, it may provide you with interesting new ways to use a pc. It will also suit someone that hasn’t used a pc before. I think it would be easier for someone that’s never touched a computer because they don’t go in with any pre-conceived ideas. So overall, I think it is worth the punt if you’re interested in something new and a little different.

Let me start by saying that for the price, you could do a lot worse than the ASUS A53U-XE1. I really like it, it’s not designed to win any speed records, but it’s a good solid laptop aimed for home and small business use. It would also be ideal for students as well.
The ASUS A53U-XE1 has a 15.6 inch display, which has a nice output. It plays HD videos with ease, and the video comes out smooth and sharp. I found the speakers to be not to bad either, although, if you want better quality, then either good quality headphones or larger speakers will help. In all honesty, the built in speakers will do the job.
ASUS A53U-XE1 Review
It will be able to handle light gaming, but again, it’s not built for raw speed, so if you’re prepared to put up with so-so frame rates, then it will do the job.
The keyboard is full sized and is a breeze to type on. As you may have seen in my other reviews, I really rate a keyboard highly that includes a numeric keypad. The touch pad works very nicely too. The ASUS A53U-XE1 includes a feature that helps prevent the touch pad being accidentally pressed if you brush it with your palm or wrist. It worked pretty well for me when I tested this out.
It handles multitasking quite well, I had a few browsers open and some other test software running in the background, and there wasn’t much noticeable difference in performance.
The battery lasted about 6 hours for me on it’s very first charge. That’s pretty impressive, as some laptops will only give a couple of hours at best. It’s very handy if you like taking your work with you on a train, or outside somewhere. The case is nice and sturdy and it runs very quietly. I tested it out while my wife watched tv, and even in quiet moments you couldn’t really hear the fan running at all.

The Toshiba Satellite L755-S5271 is an ideal machine for students, small business owners, light gamers, families, or if you’re looking at replacing that 3 year old laptop that just died two weeks after your warranty ran out (don’t you hate that?).
The 15.6 inch display is nice and bright, and the colors are vivid without washing out. It boasts a full sized keyboard with numeric keypad, which if you’ve read my other reviews, will know that I love them. One thing I noticed right away was the shorter than usual space-bar. It took a little while to get used to it, but after using it for half an hour I didn’t really notice it anymore.
- Toshiba Satellite L755-S5271 Review
It has a HDMI port, which allows you to hook it up to your flat screen tv. I used it to test out on my 40 inch LCD HD TV, and the results when playing movies were impressive for a machine at this price point. I always enjoy testing it out with youtube videos and it comes out pretty nicely. The native output of the Toshiba Satellite L755-S5271 is 720p which is all I would have expected for a pc as keenly priced as this.
The plastic body will flex a little bit if you hold it in one hand, but overall, it’s not too bad. The built in speakers aren’t great, but they’re not meant to be. If you’re an audiophile, then I suggest using your headphones when listening to music or watching videos. In terms of performance, it works well for it’s price. Newer games can be played at tolerable frame rates, and videos run smooth.
Another thing that I was impressed with was the battery life. I managed to get over 5 hours though normal use. I had a couple of web pages open, and some test programs as well, so this is good news if you intend to use it away from mains power for long periods.

If you’re looking for a desktop replacement machine, then I recommend to strongly consider the HP Pavilion dv6-6170us. It boasts quad-core performance, and also has very solid graphics performance as well. It looks fantastic too, and would look good on any desk. The brushed aluminum body is very rigid.
HP Pavilion dv6-6170us Review
The keyboard isn’t back lit, but it does include a numeric keypad, and if you’re like me and do a lot of accounting or anything that requires lot’s of number crunching, then this will definitely be a plus. The track pad works really well, and is very responsive and more importantly, accurate.
The HP Pavilion dv6-6170us includes what HP has dubbed, Beats Audio. Simply put, it enhances the sound output and I must say, it sounds pretty good (especially when using good headphones). It also features two USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports, card reader, bio-metric finger print reader and 750GB 5400RPM HDD. A SDD drive would be better, but obviously it would inflate the price somewhat.
For gamers, it will handle most titles, and it’s quite capable of doing some video or photo editing too. The battery gave me over 6 hours on its first charge, which is pretty good considering the power of this machine. A Blu-Ray/DVD burner combo drive is also included.

So what do I think? For the price, and features, this is an excellent laptop. It will perform all tasks that will be common to most of us. It’s not a world beater for gamers, but that doesn’t really matter. Hello, and welcome to my Apple MacBook Pro MC700LL/A Review, part of my quest to help you find the best laptop under 1000 dollars. Please note, this particular machine is a little more than 1000 bucks, but I couldn’t resist including a review of it. It’s that good.

The Apple MacBook Pro MC700LL/A is made from a solid piece of aluminum, and it shows. It feels really rigid, but it’s light weight at the same time. It boasts a battery that lasts for 7 hours, although, that will depend on what you’re doing with it or course. I got around 6 hours after charging it for the first time while using it in “everyday” testing. The battery is integrated into the machine so the only way you can replace it is to have an authorized dealer do it. But in all honesty, by the time the battery shows signs of not holding charge, you’ll either use the power adapter, or, replace the entire machine.
- Apple MacBook Pro MC700LL Review
Something that will appeal to users of previous Macs, is the introduction of a built in SD card reader. It also has a DVD drive slot which I love, no tray to accidentally damage when it’s sticking out. It also has a full sized island keyboard, with the keys being actually raised from the body, which makes typing a pleasure. The keyboard is back lit too, which is activated when in low light situations. Not only do the keys become illuminated, but the screen will actually dim slightly so you won’t be dazzled if someone turns out the lights while you’re working.
The Apple MacBook Pro MC700LL/A plays 1080p movies with ease and it looks stunning. The track pad is similar in some ways to how you would operate an iphone, or ipod touch. If you’ve never used one before, it can take a bit of time to get used to. I’m not usually a Mac user, so I needed to get some tuition at Apple.com, but I must say, it works really well, and is very accurate. I found that Apple actually has many handy videos to get you started if you’ve never used a MacBook Pro.
